Another enormous flower found in Indonesia is the Amorphophallus titanum, or Titan arum. It is also known as the "corpse flower" for its unpleasant odor. Like the Rafflesia, the Titan emits the smell of rotting flesh to attract pollinators. Technically, the Titan arum is not a single flower. It is a cluster of many tiny flowers, called an inflorescence. The Titan arum has the largest unbranched inflorescence of all flowering plants. The plant can reach heights of 7 to 12 feet and weigh as much as 170 pounds!

the flower looks like it came from another planet. can u put pictures of mutated animals/plants in your blog? make it a little bit gross la...it's too proper for a bio blog.
Nadia the anonymous here. Is that flower bigger and stinkier than the Rafflesia? Is it as stinky as the tind sampah? LOL...
yeap it definitely looks alien. but that makes it interesting. and interesting is better than gross dhivia. :)
nadia, it's as stinky as the rafflesia but in a different category. the rafflesia is the biggest flower this is the biggest influorescence.
oh no, sorry sir... I have this typo syndrom... Dhivia is having gross thoughts. We both commented in college at the library earlier today. Heheh... Interesting sir.
Nadia
what kind of pollinators are attracted to these 'sweet smelling' plants?hehe..great article mr. jaya!
now i know that the Rafflesia plant isn't the only stinky plant around...
ema has been here :)
welcome ema! these flowers attract insects that normally feed on dead animals ("carrion"). Carrion-loving insects include many species of flies, carrion beetles, and wasps.
hello sir!!!
i have some 'fun' facts for you.
1. The combined weight of all the world's ants is equal to that of all the humans on earth.
2. Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine (a compound related to caffeine), which can sicken and kill family pets.
3. Amelia (shelton) has many nicknames. the most interesting one so far is m_d_n_a (fill in the blanks)
4. Some red food colorings are made from ground-up beetles.

hhmmm...no 3 is a tough one. *scratches head* or maybe it's still too early in the morning. ;)
ooh! ooh! I know what's number 3! It's MADONNA!! ... ooh! ooh! I know what's number 3! It's MADONNA!! Dhivia, you're so mean... *grins*
I thought eating chocolate produces 'feel good' hormones. Mmmm~...
Nadia
theobromine is actually a weaker stimulant than caffeine.
as for 'feel good' hormones, a study found that anandamide, found in chocolate, might act in the brain similarly to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), found in marijuana. but they said that a 130-pound person would have to eat 25 pounds of chocolate to feel effects similar to marijuana. the study also found that chocolate contains n-acylethanolamines which may preserve the brain's natural anandamine and so extending any uplifting effects from the chocolate's anandamide.

-.-" even flower is heavier than me... as for the 'fun' facts from dhivia, i find the first one very interesting... and before this i will think of refflesia if someone ask me about 'plant with unpleasant smell'...
here's something else on ants:
Ant is a common name for members of a family of about 11,000 species of insects that live in highly organized societies called colonies.
Hey! Mr. Jaya deleted Nadia's comment on marijuana! I mean, since chocolates can cause diabetes... Can we take marijuana as a alternative? LOL
wanna hear what marijuana causes?
Decrease in testosterone levels and lower sperm counts for men. Increase in testosterone levels for women and increased risk of infertility. still think marijuana is a good alternative to chocolates? :)
Mwahahah, men can get mandul because of that. Eh, but women can't make babies and become a man, scary...
Nadia
scary indeed!
