Why do men have nipples?

If you're wondering what I'm doing talking about men's nipples, let me assure you I was just as shocked that my student asked me this exact question in class. Yes, you know who you are. ;p
I have to admit though, I've never actually thought about this one. So i decided that this would be a good place to present some answers available for this question.
When talking about women, the answer is very clear. The mammary glands are found in the breasts and the output of milk for the baby is through the nipples. Infant suckling stimulates the nerve endings in the nipple and areola, which signal the pituitary gland in the brain to release hormones which in turn produces and causes the release of the milk.
What about men? After looking through some websites, I found the following website with the best, most concise and easiest to understand answer. Plus, it has some related issues.

It is also for men who want to become women.

Me thinks that …the nipples on men serves a purpose – as a baby pacifier. This thought came from overhearing conversations between nursing mothers who complained that their babies suckle merely for comfort and not feeding. Also, a friend from the Sarawak interior once mentioned that during church sermons it is very common to see mothers giving the baby the ‘teat’ once the infant starts crying. The ‘teat’ not only acts as a food source but also a pacifier.
This brings us back to the men-nipple purpose. If male nipples were redundant it would have sort of disappeared long ago through evolution. But till today it is still kind of pronounced on men’s chest and both the male and female pairs look identical.
Hence, perhaps during the cave-man years men also had the duty of child caring. Human-infant cries are one of the loudest and may act against early humans who were hiding from predators. In the absence of the mother, the father would have to offer something similar to the mother’s nipple to pacify a crying infant. And the closest resemblance to the female nipples?……the male nipples.

so there is support for you statement that nipples on men serve as a baby pacifier. as for the cave-man part, you can only speculate no?
